Baker died after street falls

FAMILY and friends of a “popular and happy-go-lucky” baker who died of severe head injuries after falling in an Angel street packed the inquest into his death yesterday (Thursday).
Peter Shaw, a 46-year-old head baker at Sainsbury’s in Liverpool Road, died after a series of falls – first in the King Edward VI pub in Bromfield Street, Angel, and twice in streets near the N1 Centre – two weeks before Christmas last year.
Staff at the pub, where Mr Shaw was a regular, told the St Pancras inquest how on the afternoon he died he had been served only one drink before he collapsed at the bar, apparently under the influence of alcohol.
Witnesses reported seeing Mr Shaw, a father-of-three from King Square, Finsbury, falling two more times in the street outside the pub, once striking his head on a parked car.
Jamie Balliu, a passer-by, told the inquest he had found a man in rectangular glasses and orange Sainsbury’s jumper on his back in the middle of the road.
He said: “When I asked if he’d been hit he nodded, but when I asked if it was a car or a person he shook his head. He was saying something about being a grandpa and how beautiful his little kid was.”
An ambulance was called but Mr Shaw died at the National Hospital for Neurology in Bloomsbury later that day.
Coroner Dr Andrew Reid said: “Any one of these trips, slips or falls was sufficient to cause his injuries.”
Speaking outside the inquest, Mr Shaw’s brother-in-law, Gary Boulton, said the death had been “a big loss to a lot of people”. He added: “He’d just become a grandfather as well. It’s just devastating.”
Verdict: accidental death.
