Chef’s food for thought
• IT was interesting to see Jamie Oliver raise the same concerns as Green Party councillor Katie Dawson over Labour’s plans for free school meals (TV’s Jamie: My fears over free dinners, March 6).
Her budget proposals for healthy eating in schools included raising the income threshold for free school meals (from £15,000 to £20,000), providing free fruit for all schoolchildren in Islington (currently only available to infants), setting up tuck shops with free healthy snacks in every secondary school and creating a community kitchen in every school, where children, parents and carers can get together after school to cook meals and learn about healthy eating.
The Green Party believes these measures would be fairer – by benefiting secondary schools where there is a higher proportion of children from needy backgrounds, more financially sustainable and have a greater impact on healthy eating and education in Islington.
