Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 March 2009

Late, late post office

• PRIVATISATION, wholly or in part, has been a success in certain areas of public service and an obvious hindrance to others.
Not so very long ago postal workers would render lifetime service in common with other occupations such as district nurses.
But throughout Europe such working practices have greatly changed, with very few workers nowadays having continuity in the same employment. Even a random selection of CVs bears this out. From these everyday changes postal systems cannot remain immune.
One feature which hopefully will change is the closure of High Street post offices at 5.30pm.
Much of their work could be contractually outsourced to supermarkets, which are open until 10pm, and thereby give more fluid and adequate service.
Although I do not mind queuing at the Holloway Road office, my experience of the indifference and unhelpfulness of staff compels me further to consider that privatisation of the service would serve customers beneficially.
