Inspectors praise ‘outstanding’ leadership at St Luke’s primary

A FINSBURY primary school has been judged to be outstanding by Ofsted officials for the second time in three years.
St Luke’s Primary School in Radnor Street was awarded the top grade again following an inspection in January.
The church school was praised by inspectors for bringing up its pupils’ ability from below average when they join to above average when they leave.
It recognised that while many students join the school with lower than average learning skills and many do not speak English, they are all “growing up into friendly, lively, articulate and caring young people”.
It states: “In some years, attainment on entry is very much lower than that usually found. By the time pupils leave at the end of Year 6, their attainment is above average.”
Achievements of older pupils proved that the school’s focus on building a solid foundation for learning in their early years had paid off, pointing to the school’s position in national league tables.
“For several years, the achievements of pupils during this key stage [ages 7-11] has been in the top 5 per cent nationally.”
The report said “all the school’s strengths stem from outstanding leadership and management” and paid particular attention to the “excellent leadership” of executive head Ann Dwulit, who also leads Clerkenwell Parochial Primary School.
However, it said Ms Dwulit was part of a team that worked consistently well together while teaching and lessons were “at least good and a considerable proportion outstanding”.
In a letter addressed to pupils, inspectors spelled out their achievements.
“You are all making great progress because the adults are very good at helping you learn,” it said. “Everyone seems to really enjoy school.”
Ms Dwulit said: “We are delighted to be judged as outstanding again.”
School chief Councillor Paula Belford said: “This is another fantastic Ofsted report for an Islington school.”
