Appeal to gay victims of sneak thefts

DETECTIVES are seeking victims of a thief who befriends men in gay pubs then raids their homes while they are asleep.
Islington police have recovered a hoard of high-value electrical equipment, which they believe may have been stolen.
The investigation began after a 49-year-old man had two mobile phones, a laptop and a camera stolen from his Islington home.
He had earlier met a man in the Quebec pub in Marble Arch and the two had returned to Islington to carry on drinking.
Detective Constable Jason Shallis said that men from the gay community might feel embarrassed about reporting the thefts to police. “I would like to assure them we will handle all calls sensitively,” he added.
“We have recovered some expensive and high-quality electrical equipment which we are keen to return to the rightful owners. We urge victims to come forward and speak to us in the strictest confidence.”
Victims can call the Islington police lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender officer on 020 7421 0153 in the strictest confidence.
A 36-year-old man from Stamford Hill has been charged with two counts of theft. He has been bailed to return to Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on April 17.
