Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 February 2009

Sobell just magnificent

• AS head of England Squash and Racketball’s facilities group, I urge readers and councillors to consider the proposal to refurbish the Sobell sports centre from visionary architect James Dunnett.
I visit a large number of sports facilities around the country and would advise readers that, far from being in need of demolition, the present centre is a magnificent structure with an impressive “let’s play sport” feel that reaches out and grabs you as you enter the grand hall.
The changing rooms may be a little tired but are in the top 10 per cent in terms of quality compared to the dozens of centres I have visited in the past two years. If refurbished at the relatively modest costs already priced up (of £1,200-£1,500 per square metre) the centre could truly be held up as a shining example of Islington’s 2012 Olympic legacy.
This proposal will involve 20 per cent more sports facilities at the Sobell and refurbishment of the high-quality, magnificent building. It will contribute to housing but crucially without demolition.
Finally, what cost can be ascribed to the prospect of no sports facilities at the Sobell for three years or more if the council goes for demolition. The community surely should not be so deprived.
