Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 February 2009

Why force out traders?

• I AM appalled at the treatment of the small independent traders who provide such valuable services to commuters outside Highbury and Islington station (Newsagent pledges: I’ll fight eviction to the last, February 20).
The friendly newsagent, Harendra Bhatt, has served the community outside the station for 20 years, and now Network Rail is effectively forcing him and these other small traders out of business.
This is not acceptable, and Network Rail must not be allowed to take such draconian action against valued members of our community. I only hope this is not yet another example of powerful, faceless corporations ganging up to force small traders out of business, so they can replace them with impersonal high street chain stores.
Please sign Mr Bhatt’s petition, and write to local politicians asking them to back these traders in their hour of need.
