Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 February 2009

Where was our MP?

• A COALITIONoalition of Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and rebel Labour MPs tried to block the building of a third runway at Heathrow, which came to a vote in Parliament last week – but where was Labour’s Islington MP Emily Thornberry?
In November 2007, Ms Thornberry posted on her website: “Islington says No to Heathrow Expansion.”
Emily wrote: “I’m very concerned about the effect that an extra runway at Heathrow would have, especially as with the danger of climate change we need to be reducing our carbon emissions not raising them.”
She also posted a picture of herself at a Greenpeace rally in Islington protesting against Heathrow expansion. But when it came down to the vote she was nowhere to be seen. She had vanished.
This is a kick in the teeth to all those in Islington who hoped their MP would match words with action. When it came to doing what she is elected to do – represent Islington in the House of Commons – she was, once again, entirely absent.
But that wasn’t even the most bizarre part of Ms Thornberry’s airport contortions. Even though she vanished for the vote, she did pop into the Commons chamber to accuse Greenpeace of being a cheerleading wing of the Conservative Party.
The fact is that people across the political spectrum recognise that the government is making a terrible decision and came together to try to stop it. Ms Thornberry just couldn’t see past petty, party-political bickering.
