UNWANTED sofas, shelves and chairs are being given new homes in a bid to help low-income families.
Islington Council and Quaker Social Action have launched the Homestore Furniture Re-use project to collect old furniture and storage units from homes across the borough. The furniture will then go to a charity, which will give it to needy families.
Holloway resident Wai Lee, who donated a chest of drawers, said: “This means great quality furniture is being reused and given to a charity rather than finishing up in the rubbish tip which is such a waste.”
Islington’s environment chief Cllr Greg Foxsmith said: “We’re constantly searching for new and imaginative ways to steer clear of landfill. This will benefit us all in the long run, and I’m delighted that our residents are backing this latest scheme.”
Residents can request a furniture re-use collection by calling Islington Council on 020 7527 2000.
