Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 January 2009

Hungry for education

• I AM writing to support free school meals for Islington children. Many families cannot afford “proper food”, so this would be an ideal opportunity to help. Children who are hungry cannot learn effectively. I speak as a retired basic skills teacher. Children fail to learn to read for a complex mixture of reasons. I got the “casualties “ who were brave enough to do something about it. Sadly a minority.
When children fail in school, they fail in life. School is hard in the best of circumstances, so please let’s do this one thing to make it easier.
SUE LUSDEN

THOSE opposed to Labour’s plan to introduce free school meals are being negative ninnies! Yes, it is important to bear in mind the cost of an idea like this, but ultimately it should be judged on its value.
Free school meals would have a wide range of benefits. Research suggests they can improve pupils’ behaviour as well as their health and that they can help create a better sense of community in schools.
Islington Council should enthusiastically embrace this progressive policy.
