Schools’ GCSE results just got better

ISLINGTON secondary schools are improving at more than double the national rate, according to government figures published yesterday (Thursday).
In last year’s GCSE exams, 56.4 per cent of Islington students gained five or more A*- C grades. This is a 7.1 per cent improvement on 2007’s previous high of 49.3 per cent and compares to a national improvement rate of 3.3 per cent at this level.
Islington has moved up eight places in the national league table for the percentage of pupils gaining five good GCSEs.
Results for 16-year-olds in the borough are now more than double the 26.5 per cent figure of eight years ago.
Two boys’ schools – Central Foundation and St Aloysius College – produced results that exceeded the national average. At Highbury Grove School, 62 per cent of students achieved five good GCSEs – its best-ever figure.
