A splash of class: Adults enjoy swimming lessons

MORE than 200 adults have won their water wings after taking advantage of free swimming lessons across Islington.
Since October, Aquaterra Leisure, who run the borough’s public sports centres, has been offering eight free lessons for adults who have never learned to swim or had long forgotten how.
Adewale Onabadejo, 26, decided to enrol so he could finally face his fears of swimming. He said: “My instructor has been great because she delivered step-by- step lessons which have enabled me to have more confidence in the pool.”
And Rufiat Shomade, who enrolled herself on a refreshers course and talked her husband Akeem into joining a beginners’ class, said: “I have to say how much my husband and I have enjoyed the weekly lessons.”
For anyone who missed out on the free classes, Aquaterra is now charging a discount price of £10 for 10 lessons for adults aged 16 years and over.
More times have been added as well as lessons especially for people aged over 60 and lessons just for women.
Everyday Swim Co-ordinator Annabel Kehoe said: “I’m thrilled to be able to provide another offer for Islington’s adults to learn to swim.
“After the overwhelming demand that we saw from the offer in October, I was determined to provide more opportunities for adults to learn to swim. Swimming is a great activity for everyone and it’s never too late to learn.”
