Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 09 January 2009

Disaster strikes Gaza

• HUNDREDS of men, women and children are dead and Gaza is facing its biggest disaster in the history of the 60-year war between Palestine and Israel.
Middle East commentator and Israeli critic Daphna Baram will be speaking at an emergency meeting on Gaza organised by the Stop the War Coalition and Islington Friends of Yibna (a refugee centre in Gaza). Ms Baram is a freelance writer and journalist. Her articles have appeared in The Guardian, New Statesman, Independent, Jewish Quarterly, Ha’aretz and Yediot. She is a local resident and Israeli by origin.
Islington North Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn is also calling for a European-wide boycott of Israeli goods if the siege doesn’t end.
The meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday at St Luke’s Church, Hillmarton Road, off Camden Road, Holloway.
YAEL KAHN
Chair, Islington Friends of Yibna

• I URGE residents to contact their MP to protest in the strongest possible terms about the government’s failure to condemn unequivocally the Israeli slaughter of hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza. I (like other Islington residents) have just come home from a second day of mass protesting outside the Israeli Embassy. I returned in time to watch our Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, in an interview refuse, on behalf of the government, to agree that the Israeli response to a few hundred rockets fired with very little effect from Gaza was disproportionate.
Does this indicate that this government believes that Israeli deaths matter more than those of Palestinians? As I write, the Israeli death toll since Saturday is two, and the number of Palestinians killed is around 300 and likely to rise. The people of Gaza are being used as pawns in a political game before the forthcoming Israeli elections; a game of “Let’s elect the ones who can kill the most Palestinians”.
Please contact MPs Emily Thornberry and Jeremy Corbyn to demand that they publicly urge the government to condemn the Israeli actions and to bring whatever influence it has to bear to stop this slaughter.
