Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 December 2008

The estate we’re in

• THE Packington estate redevelopment continues to attract controversy, especially with neighbours who are fed up with the Lib Dem council not listening to them.
The revised masterplan was presented to last week’s south area planning committee, again without any sort of explanation or presentation to residents or ward councillors. We were left struggling to identify what had changed between the new masterplan and the old.
The estate is situated in St Peters ward, and St Peters councillors on the planning committee – myself and Councillor Gary Doolan – vociferously opposed the application, precisely on the grounds of lack of community consultation, suggesting that a proper public meeting be held to consult on the proposals.
The committee, led by Lib Dem councillor George Allan, chose to ignore this issue completely. So much for the Lib Dems “listening”. It is easy for Liberal Democrats, who hold the majority on the planning committee, to approve an application that doesn’t affect their wards.
We have, since this meeting, reached agreement with the developers of the Packington that more public consultation is appropriate and necessary. I hope the Lib Dems on the planning committee receive this message.
CLLR MARTIN KLUTE
