Merlin’s magic dazzles at winter fair

THE magical combination of Merlin and Father Christmas descended on Ashmount Primary School in Archway on Sunday.
Veteran actor Richard Wilson, who plays the Arthurian wizard in the BBC drama Merlin, spent time with his fans – young and old – after opening the school’s winter fair.
More than 200 people turned up to take their chance panning for gold, have a go on the tombola, visit the Christmas grotto, and pick up Christmas presents from the many stalls bearing crafts, clothes, beauty products and more.
Ashmount headteacher Pana McGee said: “It was excellent, really lovely. Richard Wilson was fantastic. He was absolutely brilliant, such a gentleman, so generous with his time. He signed postcards and posters for the children and for older people too.
“On the day we had Father Christmas and Merlin at the same time. Not many schools in north London can say that.”
The school raised £1,200, which will mostly be spent on maths equipment. The PTA decides how the money should be spent and recently paid for the whole school to see Cinderella at Millfield Theatre.
