Salary cut for starters
• COUNCILLOR Barbara Smith is silent about cutting council tax (Plunging council tax, November 28). The fact that suburban councils have higher tax when they have different circumstances should be taken into consideration.
Zone-one London Conservative boroughs, such as Westminster, Kensington and Wandsworth, have great records on council tax. Under a Conservative administration, Hammersmith and Fulham Council has cut council tax bills by 3 per cent for the second year running. Could we not do that here? I hate to point it out, but a 2.36 per cent increase is still a tax increase.
Perhaps we could start by cutting Councillor James Kempton’s salary of £61,623, which a survey revealed was the sixth-highest council leader’s salary among the London boroughs. Is our borough the sixth-best performing in London? Is Islington that more expensive to live in compared to Camden, where the leader gets £37,000?
Shadow Chancellor George Osborne promised a council tax cut under a new Conservative government. The council needs to look at ways of reducing our tax now, to help people struggling.
