One for the weekend

YOUNG people will have their say on how a £25,000 government grant should be spent on Friday and Saturday night activities.
Islington Council will ask the borough’s youngsters how they wish to see the money spent on weekend evening activities such as sports, ice-skating, music, and film-making.
Youth workers will be out and about surveying young people on what they would like to do on the weekends.
Islington is one of 77 local authorities to be given the cash, which was announced last week by Children and Young People’s Minister Beverley Hughes and will come from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
The aim is to give young people something interesting to do, so they won’t drift into crime or anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Ursula Woolley, Islington Council’s executive member for children and young people, said: “It’s great to have the extra money to be able to offer services later on a Friday and Saturday night, when people want to be out later anyway.”
The 77 local authorities are areas the government is working with through the Youth crime Action Plan and the Tackling Knives Action programme.
