Picture perfect at the Town Hall

WEDDING photographs outside the Town Hall will soon be much more picturesque as the forecourt is transformed into a plush green open space.
Plants, trees, cycle racks and a new vehicle drop-off area are being added to the site, with the works expected to be finished next spring.
The work is being paid for from funds raised from the sale of council property.
Town Hall leader councillor James Kempton said: “Islington Town Hall is one of the most popular places to get married in London. Over 1,000 couples a year consider our wedding rooms to be just what they are looking for. Outside has been another experience altogether. Visitors to the Town Hall have had to negotiate bollards, cars and kerbs and there is little space for groups to gather.”
He added: “It’s the place wedding photos get taken, it’s important that we get that space looking right.
“This redesign is creating a larger, high quality public space that’s accessible to all, looks much better and is more environmentally friendly.
“The public hall – which is reopening after refurbishment in 2009 – will double as a reception venue, so the improvements make best use of the space for the extra visitors we’ll welcome in the future.”
The 500-seat public hall next to the Town Hall, which has been mothballed for 20 years, is being re-opened next year.
The forecourt project will have fewer car parking spaces and permeable paving to allow rainwater to drain away naturally.
