Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 November 2008

Pensioners need help

• COUNCILLOR Andrew Cornwell, Islington’s former finance chief, has suggested a new policy of £100 off council tax bills for pensioners. This is an idea which has merit because pensioner poverty is a big problem in Islington.
Many pensioners have commented to me that they are just over the threshold to receive council tax benefit and those people ought to have more help with the constantly increasing level of council tax.
I hope that the council will also look at increasing the numbers of pensioners’ homes which need to be insulated against the cold this winter and at the urgent need for more advice services.
And how about reinstating the Christmas Day party for vulnerable pensioners?
Cllr Catherine West
Leader, Islington Labour councillors
