Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 November 2008

Sobell: the long wait

• IT seems clear that in the current financial situation nothing will happen at the Sobell Centre for at least a year. The Liberal Democrat council needs cash from private developers and social landlords to close the funding gap in its proposals to rebuild the Sobell – not likely in the present state of the housing market. It has consistently rejected calls for refurbishment. The fact is that they could not fund a proper refurbishment either.
Labour councillors have been pressing the council to say when and how it will proceed. The next step should be a planning brief for the site, which would set out how large a new centre would be, what facilities it would have, how many flats could be built on the site and roughly what it would look like. This is of vital importance to Sobell users and the community.
We do not know when this planning brief will be produced, but we do know the council has decided that the decision on it will not be made in the east area committee, representing the area around the Sobell, which would be the usual process, but centrally by the council, possibly by the Lib Dem-controlled executive.
Cllr Phil Kelly
Labour, Finsbury Park ward
