Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 November 2008

Where are our shops?

• I SUPPORT a flexible planning approach that would allow new exciting businesses to be located in the currently vacant units on the ground floor of the Vizion7 complex off Holloway Road.
I purchased my two-bedroom flat with my husband two years ago. One of the deciding factors in our purchase was that we would be part of a new community. Promises of shops, bars, restaurants and businesses would complete the package of our ideal living situation.
Two years on (and we were one of the last to move in) and the ground-floor units are still boarded up and look unsightly. I am a 30-year-old professional and would welcome services such as a dry cleaners, a fitness class studio, a farm produce shop, coffee shops, restaurants and bars.
The Vizion7 complex is full of young professionals and young families. Holloway Road offers very little and we’d much prefer to head towards Upper Street than frequent the excessive number of fast-food establishments near our homes.
In an area screaming out for improvement and regeneration, I am surprised the council is set on being obstructive.
I would also like to urgently request that bollards (which can be lowered for emergency services) are installed in the pedestrian area between Garand Court and Buckler Court.
I understand there are reasons why this request is taking some time to action, but I do not appreciate drivers’ anger when they are under the incorrect assumption they have the right of way.
It is also a danger for children who often ride their scooters and bicycles in that area.
