Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 07 November 2008

Time to remember war survivors as well as the fallen

• ONE of the sadder things in today’s society is that, although the fallen in two world wars are remembered by the nation, apparently little thought is given to the survivors.
October 22 saw a national rally and lobby of MPs to urge the government to support an increase in the state pension, currently below the government-acknowledged poverty level and one of the worst in Europe.
On top of which, rising food and fuel costs force the survivors of the wars to decide whether to eat or to heat.
It could be argued the fallen of two world wars would turn in their graves at the nation’s treatment of pensioners.
GEORGE DURACK
Chairman, Islington Pensioners Forum
