Skyscraper aims high
• THE article on the City Road skyscraper was one-sided (It’s ‘huge, bland’ and been given the green light, October 31). This proposed 39-storey tower will be a positive development for the Old Street roundabout – which is no beauty spot – and justify the upgrading of transport links there. For all kinds of reasons, more residents will be good for our area.
The proposed skyscraper site is an eyesore at present. Suburban sprawl cannot be sustained, so the only alternative is to go up if we are to get our carbon footprint down. This building is appropriate. On that score alone we should aim high.

• WE are told that “At nearly 150 metres, the tower will dwarf the London Eye, Barbican Towers and Centrepoint in Tottenham Court Road”. Absolute nonsense. This tower will be 131 metres, shorter than the London Eye and only a few metres taller then the other landmarks mentioned. It will hardly “dwarf” them.
This tower will be a splendid addition to London’s evolving skyline, and will go some way towards regenerating what is clearly a dilapidated and rundown area. How people can say that Old Street roundabout has a village atmosphere is beyond me.
