Public must be our eyes and ears in battle to keep vice off streets
• PLANS for a dispersal order at Market Road and Caledonian Road in Holloway have been turned down for now by police and residents.
Following complaints from residents about increasing incidents of prostitution, Liberal Democrat community safety bosses referred the request for a dispersal zone to a local committee for consideration. It was agreed that at the moment other measures would be more effective, though the situation is under constant review.
The council and police have worked incredibly hard to tackle the problems with prostitution around Market Road and everyone agrees the situation is way better than it was. But these problems have a habit of coming back. So we want residents to be our eyes and ears.
We are now looking at CCTV evidence to see if the problem is increasing.
The council is happy to consider dispersal orders if police and residents agree this is the best way forward. But it is important that ideas for dispersal zones come from the community, not politicians.
