Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 October 2008

Big debate cancelled

• AT the last council meeting, Liberal Democrats had so little to say about Islington that their main effort was put into a motion attacking the Labour government. They cancelled the “Islington Debate” and now they have cancelled their executive meeting, and a meeting of the north area committee, allegedly because there is “no business to talk about”.
We don’t want meetings for their own sake, but this is building into a pattern.
When so many families in Islington lack decent housing, when the schools (if improving) are still a long way from where they should be and when young people are looking for safe recreational opportunities, there should be lively debate about why the council has failed to provide leadership in all these areas – and what it should be doing instead.
So let the debate continue... Labour wants to hear from people. And if Lib Dems have nothing to contribute, no one will miss them.
CLLR RICHARD GREENING
Deputy leader, Islington Labour group
