Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 31 October 2008

A shed not a casino

• I WOULD like to thank Islington Council’s licensing committee, led by Councillor Tracy Ismail, for rejecting the crude attempt by Agora Amusements to pack even more soul-destroying slot machines into its premises at the corner of Seven Sisters Road and Holloway Road (Arcade thwarted in bid to boost Vegas-style payouts, October 24).
Agora’s aim was to chuck up a few glass walls and say it was three separate premises. Therefore could they have three licences. This charade was quite rightly seen for what it was. The committee described the proposed changes as “a gambling shed”. Not quite the Vegas-style “casino” Agora had hoped for.
The granting of Agora’s original licence was heavily opposed by schools, councillors and welfare organisations. The rejection of this licence change stops a bad situation becoming worse. Thanks again to the committee for keeping the best interests of the community at heart.
