Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 24 October 2008

Pensions muddle

• ON October 9 Councillor Andrew Cornwell issued a financial statement to Islington Council. Within the text, Cllr Cornwell stated, among other things, “that there is no threat to payment of pensions to Islington pensioners”. This began a process on our part of contacting retired staff by way of reassurance.
Is this the same Cllr Cornwell quoted by the Tribune as referring to a “heavy fall in the value of pensions” (Town hall cash safe but meltdown hits pensions, October 17)?
To further obscure matters Cllr Cornwell has declined to say what the 20 per cent fall would represent in real terms. All members of the council’s pension scheme (ourselves included) will be concerned at this backtracking and lack of transparency.
We insist that Cllr Cornwell and the council come clean about the exact nature of the situation and abandon this contradictory muddling.
We will be taking our concerns to the next Islington Council pensions annual meeting.
