Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 October 2008

Common sense policy

• HERE in Islington we pride ourselves on a “common sense” parking policy, so I was troubled to read the letter from George Durack, chairman of Islington Pensioners’ Forum (Targeted by wardens, September 12).
Mr Durack raised points surrounding general parking issues as well as reporting that a member of his forum received a ticket in Upper Street despite displaying a blue badge and complying with the parking sign.
Upper Street parking controls are enforced by Transport for London so I am unable to comment on the specific circumstances. However, I can assure the driver that, had it been an Islington Council ticket, we would refund it if a mistake had been made.
Blue badge fraud is particularly widespread in London so, as I’m sure disabled drivers will appreciate, the council takes a tough line on people using one illegally.
As far as Islington’s parking controls are concerned, I have offered to meet Mr Durack to discuss this more fully and promise that we are constantly looking for ways to improve the service.

Residents’ advocate, Islington Council
