They save, we pay
• EAMON McGoldrick, chief executive of Homes for Islington, states that HfI has made £4million of savings in the last four years, say since 2004 (Homes three-star rating ‘massaged’, October 3).
Let us consider another set of figures. For the year 2004-5 my actual service charge bill was £520. For the year 2008-9 my estimated bill, which includes unspecified adjustments for previous years, is £1,103.85.
So, while HfI has been saving £4million, I have seen my service charge bill more than double to over £1,100 a year. Without the “adjustments”, my bill for this year is £879, or an increase of approximately 70 per cent over the last four years. Looked at another way, while HfI has apparently been saving money, my bill has gone up from £10 to £17 a week.
At the rate that HfI is going, it will soon cost more to “manage” my flat than it costs Islington Council to run the whole borough.
