DJ to mix music with history

A SCIENTIST who doubles as a DJ will be promoting Black History Month in Islington on Wednesday.
In a talk at Central Library, Highbury, Jamaican Dr Mark Richards, a scientist and researcher at Imperial College, will focus on tackling social ills and improving performance in science subjects within the black community.
“The talk is about provoking thoughts, to think outside the box,” he said. “From my own experience I know role models are very important, especially among our youngsters.
“The media are quick to focus on the negative things that happen in our community and we need to do more to celebrate our own achievements so that it inspires our youth.”
Dr Richards, who pursues a music career as DJ Kemist, also runs a course that seeks to inspire youngsters by showing them that it is possible to be creative and have a technical background.
He explained: “Music goes hand in hand with science. In my course I teach students to manipulate sound waves, for instance, and we then create DJ remixing.”
