It’s official: park life in Whittington just got a lot greener

WHITTINGTON Park has been awarded its first ever green flag in a year which has seen a record number of the accolades presented to Islington green spaces.
Whittington Park, off Holloway Road, can now count itself among the best green spaces in the country. The park already boasts a full-size astro-turf pitch and has recently installed an “al-fresco” gym. There are further plans for a new wildlife pond and meadow.
This year Islington has received a record number of Green Flag awards. King Henry’s Walk Garden was awarded its first “Green Pennant” – recognising high quality spaces managed by voluntary and community groups.
Other parks in Islington to gain Green Flag status are Spa Fields, Finsbury; Paradise Park and Royal Northern Gardens, in Holloway; Fortune St Park, Finsbury; Edward Square, Barnsbury; Newington Green, and Gillespie Park, Highbury. Culpeper Community Garden retained its “Green Pennant”.
Praise was also heaped on Newington Green, which retained its Green Heritage Site award, one of only 42 in the country.
The scheme, sponsored by English Heritage, is an award recognising superb upkeep of historic sites.
Councillor for leisure and equalities, Ruth Polling, said: “This is so important in a densely populated borough like Islington where many residents don’t have access to private gardens.
“High-quality parks really improve our quality of life and I’m proud that so many of our green spaces have been recognised as excellent.”
