Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 19 September 2008

Teacher led the way

I WAS very sorry to read about the recent death of former Holloway School teacher Jeffrey Gordon and I associate myself entirely with those paying tribute to him.
I remember Jeff well from his time in Islington, both as a local resident and through his outstanding work at Holloway school and elsewhere in the borough. His regular upper school classes, meeting politicians from the widest political spectrum, were an outstanding initiative.
I was pleased to be among those who spoke at one of the sessions. There are hundreds of former Islington school pupils who benefited from Jeff’s innovatory teaching skills, along with scores of pupils from neighbouring boroughs such as Camden and Hackney.
JEREMY CORBYN
Labour MP, Islington North

I WISH to add my own tribute to the late Jeffrey Gordon, whom I knew slightly, on a social basis, over some 25 years until his death.
On one occasion my wife and I walked into a Seven Sisters Road restaurant, only to discover, by chance, that the owner, by then I think in his early 40s, had been taught at school by Jeff, of whom he spoke with spontaneous gratitude and evident affection.
I suspect Jeff’s obvious caring, gentle and sensitive approach, seasoned by good humour, helped bring out the best in pupils, though he was too modest to make any such claim himself. Jeff was a unique personality who will be sorely missed.
