Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 August 2008

Hard-up? Come off it

• I READ with astonishment MP Emily Thornberry pleading poverty, claiming that the Labour Party in Islington is “cash strapped” (Ken returns for fish ’n’ chips and a vote of thanks, August 1).

Is this the same Labour Party that owns its large, well-appointed, two-storey office building in Barnsbury Street? These premises must be worth nearly £1million, and it is common knowledge that the party also receives substantial rental incomes from parts of these premises, including from Ms Thornberry, who rents an office on the top floor which she pays for out of her MP’s expenses. I’ve nothing against private enterprise of this kind – it’s very New Labour and very Islington – but cash strapped it certainly isn’t.
