Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 15 August 2008

Cyclists are a menace

• I MUST add my voice to protests against cyclists, the vast majority of whom are a menace.
Anyone like me aged over 70 with no choice but to walk or take a bus, is in a unique position to see that they slow down the traffic while weaving in and out, riding just in front of buses which cannot overtake because of a bus stop just ahead. If the driver does, the cyclist will only overtake him while the bus is stationary, only for the whole procedure to start all over again.
They appear to have no knowledge of the Highway Code or consideration for pedestrians or anyone else, delivering such abuse and even spitting if challenged.
There is only one way to control the ever-increasing numbers, and that is by licensing them. Issue large number-plates corresponding to the engraved number on their frame, which can be photographed by police and citizens in case of infringement, which could carry hefty fines. This would also help prevent theft.
How many accidents do we have to have before something is done to control this holier-than-thou green aura?
