‘Pimp My Ride’ DJ to add a touch of bling to police van

HE’S a controversial rap DJ who was once the victim of a drive-by shooting but now Radio 1’s Tim Westwood is teaming up with the police to “pimp up” a riot van.
Mr Westwood will be bringing a touch of bling to an Islington Police paddy wagon, which will then be donated to a youth project as part of his MTV Pimp My Ride programme.
The programme, which takes clapped-out cars and customises them with over-the-top paintwork, sound systems, plasma screens and hi-tech gizmos, will be filming in Islington some time next month.
Islington Police Superintendent John Sutherland has promised a brand new recording studio will be one of the features installed in the van. He said: “We’re taking a riot van, something young people would normally view with suspicion, and turning it into a mobile youth facility. It’s one of the most fun things I’ve ever been involved in.
“Youth provision varies from place to place and we know young people won’t travel far to access services so it’s good to develop something we can take to them.”
He added: “It’s going to have a recording studio in the back and we’re going to take it into estates.”
