Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 11 July 2008

Sell-off scandal

• THE whole Structadene property disposal is just another example of incompetence at the Lib Dem council. Giving away our assets at knock-down prices is not only wrong, but a scandal and disgrace.
What’s more, the council denied local businesses the opportunity of a level playing field over the acquiring of freeholds to their premises. When subsequent Freedom of Information requests followed, “clerical errors” were made on the sold prices list, hiding the fact the underselling had taken place.
What worries me is the arrogance displayed by some members of the Lib Dem executive, who brush aside this saga. “No comment” is not good enough from executive member Councillor Andrew Cornwell, and for Councillor Terry Stacy to say “we haven’t lost any money” goes to show how much the Lib Dems have lost touch.
How many more undersold properties are out there to be uncovered? What’s needed is a full inquiry into the property sale.
How can anyone trust the Lib Dem council to do the right thing in future?
RICHARD BUNTING
Deputy chairman, Islington Conservatives
