Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 June 2008

Wonder of Woolies

• CAN you help save the Chapel Market branch of Woolworths.
Our Woolies is one of the busiest shops in the borough. It sells everything from plugs to baby clothes and paint.
Some of my friends in their 70s and 80s have been shopping at Woolies since they were children. If you grew up in Islington it was a regular haunt on a Saturday. So much so that it has become part of our heritage. Who hasn’t had their photograph taken with their pals in its photo booth.
Islington does not need another Waitrose. There are already ones in Holloway Road, Whitecross Street and the Brunswick Centre.
Another supermarket would kill Chapel Street market. What’s left of it, that is, thanks to the council’s high rents.

I agree with everything that has been said in this article and i believe that Woolworths should not close down. I have grown up with Woolworths and it caters for everyone, any age. It is a much more practical store which we need within the area. We do not need another high end supermarket.
If there is a petition, i would gladly sign it.
Terri
