Three rose by merit
• I USUALLY enjoy reading Illtyd Harrington’s contributions to the Tribune but his demolition job on the autobiographies of Cherie Blair, Michael Levy and John Prescott (which I’ve read) was harsh and in part unfair (‘The waiter and the porter and the upstairs maid’, June 6).
The Blair government had some awful policies – penal affairs is just one – and, of course, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have blighted those countries irreparably. But one should note these three people rose, by merit, from humble circumstances. Although they prospered, Blair has corrupted the Labour Party and it is difficult to see how it can rescue the government.
But I do not despair; there are still many fine individuals in the party and with time may yet plan and construct a better Britain with justice and equality.
