Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 May 2008

U-turn is so welcome

• I HAVE very little to add to my colleague Andrew Berry’s letter on the subject of privatisation except to endorse his thank-you to the Tribune for pursuing this matter with vigour (Is snub to private firms a sign of things to come? May 23).
The U-turn is to be welcomed, but Councillor John Gilbert should reflect on the fact that if it was not for the pressure applied by the trade unions and other organisations there would have been no U-turn.
Bringing the service in-house is, and always has been, the right thing to do. Trade unions such as Unison have many members who are retired and a number are concerned for their future vulnerability.
On behalf of Unison’s retired members I would like to thank Cllr Gilbert for not inflicting privatisation on the service, its users (and potential future ones) and the workforce.
TP Luke
Retired members officer, Islington Unison
