Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 May 2008

Post office alternatives

• I AM somewhat confused. Emily Thornberry is a member of the Labour government who voted to close many post offices.

She then appears locally fighting for the Essex Road post office to be kept open. The result of the Essex Road post office being kept open is that at least three other post offices in Islington must now close. Maybe she will tell us which ones she would like to be closed. This is utter hypocrisy.
Meanwhile, Labour councillors in Islington are trying to blame the Lib Dem council for post office closures! They say the council should subsidise post offices from our council taxes – a potentially dangerous path for any political party.
We need to ask ourselves why and when we use our post offices. When I started my business 15 years ago I used my post office almost every day. Now I use a post office maybe once a month.
Do we want our council to take over the running of small post offices? Camden and other councils are looking into this but they are receiving little or no help from the Post Office management.
Whenever I go to or pass the post offices in Upper Street, Holloway Road and Highbury Corner there are frequently long queues – but why? Should we not try to find out why people use their local post offices. Do they not have alternatives for these services?
Post office closures are a political hot potato and not many politicians are coming up with alternative options. Maybe all political parties should start coming up with some constructive ideas rather than playing Emily Thornberry-type politics.
I don’t want post offices to close, as in many parts of the country they are a vital community service but they have to be commercially viable (or do they?). Food for thought.
