Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 May 2008

Developers' friends

I AM writing to express my disappointment that Green councillor Katie Dawson voted to support the Lib Dem leadership of Islington Council for another year.
The vote was important. By voting to keep James Kempton as council leader, she voted for a leadership that over the last year has sold off hundreds of local shops and failed to meet Islington’s target on low-cost homes for people in need of getting on the property ladder.
The Lib Dems also failed to improve our youth services after one of the most horrific youth crimes this borough has seen.
Perhaps worst for us in Highbury is the Lib Dems’ continuing refusal to press for the construction of a sports centre to replace the JVC Centre, which was part of the Highbury planning agreement. This is the record of the leader she voted for.
Islington needs a change, and in the recent London elections the Lib Dems and Greens lost their share of the vote in Islington.
After the London election, the Lib Dems are on the decline in Islington and the Tories are on the attack. But instead of backing the party of social justice, the Green councillor backed the big developers’ friends in Islington – the Lib Dems – and that is a shame.
