Award winners and finalists at the ceremony

Unsung heroes hailed at night where pride takes centre stage

A COLORUFUL ceremony saluted the winners of the second annual EC1 Pride in Our People Awards on Wednesday.
The gala evening at LSO St Luke’s in Old Street was hosted by BBC News presenter Kate Silverton, who lives in Islington.
Among the winners were Michael Potten (EC1 Young Person of the Year), who helps as a volunteer at youth projects, and Meleisha Lovemore (EC1 Carer of the Year). As well as caring for her own children, she looks after her teenage brothers and the son of a best friend who died.
George Hussein, proprietor of King’s Bakery and Fish Central restaurant, won the EC1 Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the EC1 Local Business of the Year Award. He has run his King Square business for 40 years.
