Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 May 2008

Thrilled by Boris win

I WAS away when the result of the London mayoral election was announced but what a thrill to hear Boris Johnson won.
“Great” Maggie Thatcher had her faults but she was a good judge of character, hence she got rid of Ken Livingstone.
Sadly, the electorate must have been in cloud cuckoo land to put him back in office. This is a man whose only claim to fame is bleeding private and commercial vehicle owners dry in the guise of easing congestion.
And who can forget the bendy bus? Get on, get off, no charge. Oops, mind those road users when turning left.
M WARD
Gee Street, EC1

I AM worried that the bravado of the Tory Party here in Islington, shown in Richard Bunting’s letter last week, will have the grave effect of letting Labour in by the back door (Face it, Ken had simply outstayed his welcome, May 16).
In the recent London elections the Tories were pulled along on Boris’s considerable coat-tails. But even though they poured resources (and leaflets) into Islington and had one of the biggest personalities in British politics at their head, they still couldn’t unseat the anonymous Labour London Assembly member (what’s her name again?).
The Conservatives don’t have a single councillor in Islington and come a distant third in parliamentary elections. So, for the Tories to claim they are on the cusp of capturing Islington is not only a nonsense, it is a dangerous nonsense that risks letting the Labour Party slink back into power on the council again.
No wonder that Labour’s local boss, Councillor Catherine West, is encouraging the Tories to come into Islington (Mayor Boris sure to be an unmitigated disaster, May 9).
Islington’s Lib Dem council has made our borough cleaner and more environmentally friendly, and put real, practical measures in place to improve safety on our streets and parks – all while keeping our council tax among the lowest in London for seven years on the trot.
Even though Labour are discredited and dispirited nationally, we don’t want to give them the chance of taking our borough back to the bad old days of Labour maladministration, when the rubbish lay for days on the streets and the council tax was the highest in London.
Only the Lib Dems are in the position to take on Gordon Brown’s foot soldiers in Islington.
