Picking on vulnerable
• ON July 20, 2007, a Tribune article highlighted the plight of the sick and disabled in sheltered accommodation at Cutbush House, in Brecknock Road, Holloway. It was about the removal of the words “Ambulance bay. Keep clear” from the road outside the building, where we now have two yellow lines instead.
Builders put their huts, rubble and machinery there and cars, vans and even a six-wheel lorry park there. This means that frequently when ambulances arrive they have to park in the middle of the road, where they pick up or deliver the sick and disabled. Worse still, they have to go further down the road to find a gap between vehicles.
Our councillor, Wally Burgess, was concerned that this may cause an accident and put forward certain measures which were turned down.
Over the years the council has done many things for the people. This is why we find it hard to understand why it has picked on the vulnerable. So we say to the council: if you must be politically correct, would you put a sign up and paint on the road outside Cutbush House and all other elderly care homes the words “Disabled bay”?
