Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 May 2008

School gym looming

• THERE are growing concerns among residents that planning guidelines are being flouted on the St Aloysius College’s redevelopment site in Archway.
Residents are becoming increasingly frustrated by irregular communication and inconsistent updates from Islington Council, St Aloysius College and Balfour Beatty, the construction company.
The ongoing construction is scheduled to continue well into 2010. Many of the initial reassurances to the community have been completely disregarded, with a number of significant changes to the original plans. These include building a large imposing sports facility outside the original footprint of the school and within feet of an existing conservation area.
Visible from a number of homes, the gym will tower above many of the gardens of Waterlow Road. It will seriously restrict natural daylight to the existing conservation area and jeopardise the survival of many other protected trees. Other concerns include the intensive building schedule, security, noise and pollution. Residents are demanding a meeting with all the parties involved.
