Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 May 2008

Get over the humps

• REPLACING Islington’s speed humps with cameras would be an expensive and undesirable response – the council already makes millions from traffic enforcement cameras and surely we don’t want to add to that (Damages payout fuels anti-bump campaign, May 9).
Automatic speed warning signs are used in Camden to good effect. Consideration should also be given to the solution recommended by Harley Sherlock in his thoughtful book, Cities are Good for Us (published by Transport 2000 in 1990). He cites the Dutch example of “woonerven”, which use trees and stretches of end-on parking spaces on alternate sides of the road to create a tortuous through route for traffic which is slowed down by the resulting gentle chicanes and narrowings, without the need for humps.
