Sacrificing open space
• IF Islington Council’s report confirming the potential of the existing Ashmount School for refurbishment is unfinished, as David Barry says, why did the council itself quote (or rather, misquote) its findings in January in support of its plan to rebuild the school on Crouch Hill Community Park (Reality of daily school life in building not fit for purpose, May 2)?
Why on the same occasion did the council claim there is “strong community support” for rebuilding the school there whereas the majority of those without children at the school opposed it?
Parents may well have felt that selling the school’s site and taking open space for a new one was the only way adequate funds for improvements would be found.
The report is, in fact, broadly finished, barring technicalities. Attention should be paid to its recommendations.
We all want the children of Ashmount School to have the best educational environment. Some of us believe a building of the calibre of the existing one can provide it – without sacrificing public access to open space.
