Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 1 May 2008

George had right to visit

• IN an article about the police raid on Blackstock Road, Councillor Meral Ece accused George Galloway of opportunism and “latching onto the unease that some of the Algerian community felt” (Galloway pledge on police raid, April 18).
Cllr Ece claimed Mr Galloway had “no local involvement whatsoever”, which is meaningless. The Respect party, of which Mr Galloway is leader, has had a presence in Islington for four years. We have stepped up our public activities recently (and not just in regard to the London Assembly election). We are here for as long a haul as is needed to get rid of New Labour.
Cllr Ece attempts to excuse the heavy-handed, to put it politely, policing of Blackstock Road, claiming “illegal activities were taking place”.
As the police have not publicised their finds, they obviously did not find material which could conceivably justify the resources deployed.
Mr Galloway was in the area as part of his campaign to become a member of the London Assembly. And, no, he will not be double-jobbing, as he is standing down from his position as MP for Bethnal Green and Bow.
