Good Vibrations at charity footy game

YOUNG people in care played their social workers at football – and won – in a charity event.
The Young Vibes team, made up from young people who are looked after by Islington Council and Shaftesbury Leaving Care Service, played against a side formed by their social workers, aptly named Social Workers United.
The match at Market Road playing fields was in aid of the charity Sports Relief.
At half time, there was still everything to play for, with Young Vibes taking a lead of 2-1. But by the time the final whistle blew, the Young Vibes were celebrating their 3-1 win.
Aside from raising funds for a good cause, the event also provides an opportunity for the young people to discuss how they feel about the services and aims to help strengthen the relationships between looked after children and their social workers.
The Mayor of Islington, Councillor Barbara Smith, attended the event and awarded the winning team with medals and a cup.
She said: “Well done to the Young Vibes Team. It’s a fantastic achievement for the young people involved.
“Congratulations should also go to those who helped organise the event and raise money for charity – and to those supporters who braved the cold and came to cheer on the teams!”
For younger children, other sporting events such as rounders, touch rugby and football skills sessions run by an Arsenal coach, were arranged.
The raffle – with prizes that included a signed Arsenal football – helped to raise a total of over £400 for Sports Relief.
