Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 April 2008

Dogs need parks too

• WHILE people in the south of the borough are complaining about access to parks by dogs being increased, here in the north of the borough we have the reverse problem with plans to stop access by dogs to parks which currently have it.
Surely, what they need to do is to make sure everyone has easily walkable access to a park allowing dog access and also to one allowing dog-free play for children. It is not right or fair to have three dog-free parks in a row.
Dogs need to be walked every day whatever the weather. Many dog owners are elderly and should not have to walk further to find an exercise area.
Widespread closure of parks because of the anti-social behaviour of a minority of dog owners is not fair on the responsible owners or their dogs, especially when there has not been any effort to make people clean up after their dogs and no one has ever been fined.

• PEOPLE are worried that the consultation on dogs is a botch job and that the Lib Dems’ proposals could put children in danger.
The proposal to increase the amount of shared public space between small children and dogs relies heavily on all dog owners acting 100 per cent responsibly at all times. Parents will simply not take the risk, and thus be banished from the space.
The proposals have not been properly thought through from young children’s point of view. This consultation is unclear and could put children in danger. Let’s have some proper health advice from animal and child-care experts before we make any decisions on this.
